Identity Reconstruction of Language Teachers: From EFL to ESP Teaching

This study offers an analysis of eight ESP teachers’ identity reconstruction in a university context in Northern Cyprus. The researcher aims to analyze the stages that the ESP teachers went through in the transition period while they have been transferred from teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in English Preparatory School to teaching ESP (English for Specific Purposes) in Faculty of Law and how they have reconstructed their identities as ESP teachers. For the data collection, this study draws on life-history interview and narrative inquiry of the participants, and the field notes collected throughout the study. The collected data were triangulated and analyzed together with the use of thematic field analysis. The study results revealed that during the transition period from EFL to ESP teaching, all the teachers have experienced some challenges regarding their ESP teacher identity reconstruction. During the reconstruction period of ESP teacher identity, the teachers had some roles such as researcher, material provider and benefitted from their professional experiences, received training on ESP teaching, engaged in collaborative work and in Professional Learning Community (PLC).

Novel 'Falling Awake'

Based on the life of one of my close friends ‘Falling Awake’ is a psychological, as well as a philosophical novel. The protagonist Tamara is a young woman who spends her adulthood questioning why she’s always down and in a place she doesn’t want to be in. She blames God, blames her authoritarian upbringing, especially her stepmother Margaret’s belittling treatment towards her, then blames her abusive husband Draven. Before marrying she wishes for someone to come into her life and to make it wholesome, but later learns that depending on others to make you wholesome is a big mistake. Present effects might be due to Karmic causes in the past, but future effects arise from the causes we make in the present. Supporting and encouraging suffering is disrespectful to the dignity of life, but there can be no revealing the true without disproving the wrong. And when people become pessimistic it’s like they hide behind a dark cloud that stops joy and hope from entering their hearts. No matter how difficult one’s situation is, whether they are manipulated, coerced and gaslit, there’s always a way to improve one’s life. Furthermore, we all should be able to plant a seed of courage into one another's lives.

Gamifying the classroom with Wordwall

Gamification in education is a technique used by educators to insert game play elements to an educational setting to make it more engaging. The non-game context (which is the classroom) is transformed into a game-like environment and the non-game content (learning objectives) is transformed into a game-like experience. Wordwall is a great tool to gamify the classroom as it has quite a lot of game-like features such as rewards, competition, entertainment, etc. Wordwall is easy to prepare and share and helps to spice up the classroom. During the session participants will be guided on how to prepare Wordwall tasks for the language classroom.

‘’Together We Grow, Together We Heal!’

At times, isn’t it astonishing to witness the extent to which things have become so sad, disorganized or chaotic? Do you sometimes find it difficult to cope with and adapt changes around you? You try hard but often you feel lost, don’t you? Do you have any strategies you follow when you need to recover and get back to work again? Or do you find yourself working too much just to get over traumatic period? Are you struggling to have a healthy work-life balance?

Sometimes people wish for a ‘magic wound’ that can immediately bring about positive changes in their lives or the world around them! However, real change often requires effort, perseverance, and taking proactive steps towards your goals. While it's natural to wish for quick fixes or extraordinary solutions, it's essential to recognize that sustainable change generally stems from consistent actions, personal growth, and addressing challenges directly.

During challenging and sensitive times, coming together as teachers is of utmost importance. By supporting and collaborating with one another, we can embark on a collective journey towards healing, recovery and rebuilding our lives. Engaging in professional development activities holds a healing power for teachers. The sense of belonging, community and support, fostering personal growth and resilience, sharing experiences and knowledge among peers instill a sense of empowerment and motivation, triggering the drive to make a positive impact first on our lives and also on our students’ lives.

Keeping these in mind, the session will have ’stop and think’ moments in order to find out what we individually need to recover, heal and recreate.
